A new book written and published by Kenneth Deacon, on the men and women who built the R.100 airship in Howden.

In the summer of 1930 the airship R.100 successfully flew to Canada and back.
The book tells the story of some of the people involved, and the background of the Officers and crew, and what happened to the best airship ever built in Britain.
It also covers the final stages of the building and testing of the R.101 airship, the final trial flight and the final flight when it crashed and burst into flames in Northern France in October 1930, while on its way to India.

Historic ex-York author's 'homecoming' announced
Britain's best selling author of the mid-20th century, Nevil Shute, left his place in York's history, before moving to Australia in 1950. Some of his 24 books became global best sellers and major movies, such as A Town Like Alice and the post-nuclear war story On The Beach. Shute's novels are still in print and a growing revival of interest in his life and works has spawned a world wide appreciation group.
The Nevil Shute Norway Foundation has previously gathered together every other year around the world and has now announced that it is to hold its 6th biennial conference next July in York. Spokesman, Philip Nixon said "York was an important place in Shute's life, and that's why we are so excited to get some of our UK and international members together here to discover more about this period and how it influenced his writing".
Nevil Shute moved to York in the late 1920s from London as a young man, to work on the design and production of the giant airship, R100, at Howden. When the airship project was scrapped in 1930, following the crash of rival airship R101, he co-founded an aircraft design and manufacturing company called Airspeed. This got started in 1931 in the old bus garage that is still just about standing on Piccadilly, near the Red Lion pub. Airspeed moved to Portsmouth in 1933 and became a significant business, but by then Shute had started to become a published author, with much of his early work originating from his time spent in Yorkshire.
The conference is to be held in York's Novotel between 26th and 31st July 2009. "We are still finalising Speakers and content, and are particularly interested in engaging with local historians or members of the public who have anything to contribute to our knowledge of Nevil Shute's time in the York area" said Nixon. The daughter of Barnes Wallis, Mary Stopes-Roe is to be a Guest Speaker at the Conference Banquet . A dedicated conference website has just been launched www.uk2009.info and more information about the author can be found on www.nevilshute.org .
